Omar Campos Mrs. Lehmann English 1-3 12 February 2019 Always Believe “With the 60 pick of the NBA Draft, Los Angles selects Taylor Miles. “I was the 60 pick of the NBA draft, and you wont believe what happened to me. The day I got drafted they’ told me I was going to be on the team but I wouldn’t be able to play the whole regular season. I told myself that was fine, but was going to work my butt off to play. The day I got to LA, I got to my house, and I went straight to the gym. At 4 in the morning, I was shooting and lifting, then one of my teammates walked in, and I acted like I didn’t see him. He said,” this kids going to be great”. That was my whole entire regular season. I was in the gym and shooting and lifting everyday before and after practices. It was the middle of the season, and the Lakers were struggling. There was another draft pick. His name was Bullock, and they told him he was going to play a couple of minutes, so he had to work hard. I got mad because they weren’t seeing how hard I was working, but I told myself I needed to be patient and keep working hard. The opportunity would come. It was the All-Star Break. I went to go talk to one of the greatest players in history, Kobe Bryant. I asked him how I could stay patient and still keep working hard when my coach wasn’t see how hard I was working and was picking other people in front of me. “Just stay patient and j keep working hard. Keep being a gym rat, and always” be a little kid. Ask questions. Always be annoying, and keep asking till you know the answer. “Thank you, Kobe. Means a lot. I’m going to keep on going. thanks for the advice.” There was 5 games left in the regular season, and we were in 8th place. We had to win 3 out of the 5 games to make the playoffs. I honestly thought I was going to play, but our coach said he would have to pass on me and stayed with Bullock. We barely made the playoff’s and we were going to go play against the top team in our conference. It was game 7 of the first round, and the best player on our team was out. My coach told me, “This is what you’ve been waiting for. You’re playing tonight and you’re starting, too”. I was so happy but I didn’t want to show. This I’d been ready for the whole regular season. It was game time. It was win or go home, and I had the ball. I had a mismatch. I crossed him over and shot a three. I made it I saw the look on my coach’s face he was surprise. Going into the fourth quarter, we were down by 10. I balled out. I had 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. I made the game winning shot. Everyone believed in me, now but I didn’t get caught up in the hype. I said it was one game and focus the next. We were the first team since 2002 to beat the number one team in the conference. I went on to the next round and we swept them 4 games to none. I averaged 35 ppg 10 rebounds and 10 assists, in averaged a triple double. We made on to the western conference finals. No one could believe we made it, and we won four games to two. Everybody was saying that I was the face of the franchise, but I didn’t get caught up in the hype. I just kept going and focusing on the NBA finals. It was time. It was the beginning of the NBA finals. I was locked in and focused. It was fame one with 10 seconds left. I had the ball. It was a tied game. I stepped back, shot, and had my eyes closed. I couldn’t see the rim. I shot it, and I landed. All I could hear was the crowd cheering. I made it. We led the series 3-0. We had to win one more game to be champions, and we had to go to their place and play the best team in the eastern conference. Last time we played them, we lost by 42 points. It was game time. It was beginning of the fourth quarter. The other team was surprised. They were only up by points. I told myself that the hard work I put in was going to pay off. There was 1 minute left. They were up by one point. I got the ball. My teammates set a screen. They didn’t hedge. I shot the three, and I swished it. We were up by two. We had to play good defense. With 5 seconds left, I was guarding the best player on their team. They went to shoot it, and I put my hand up and block it. The game was over. We were NBA Champions. No one could believe it. The reporter asked me, “how did you accomplish this without any games under your belt in the regular season. “ Always believe.” In conclusion, the lesson that I learned was to always keep grinding, even when nobody is looking stay poised and do your job, and the opportunity will come. When you get that opportunity, make the best of it because there could be a moment where all the hard work pays off.
